Preventing Auto Accidents
In a given year, there are as many as 6.4 million auto accidents in the United States. 2.9 million people are injured and over 40,000 are killed. Driving is one of the most consistently dangerous activities of our daily lives, and it is important to know what we can do to prevent these accidents from taking place. Here are a few tips for how to stay safe on the roads:
Keep Right. By staying in the center or right lanes of multi-lane roads, there are more places to maneuver to avoid a problem. Also, driving in the “fast lane” is more dangerous simply because of the increased speeds.
Expand your field of vision. Instead of looking only at the car directly in front of you, try to scan the area in front of that car so you can anticipate any issues that they may have. Additionally, adjusting your mirrors can almost eliminate any blind spots, but it is important to actually turn to look when changing lanes to be absolutely sure that there is not another vehicle in harm’s way.
Avoid driving at night. If at all possible, do not drive in the dark if it is not necessary. Drivers are more likely to be tired or drunk, and everyone on the road has a decreased field of vision. Other drivers may be leaving bars or parties, and may not always be able to drive safely.
