How to Prevent Boating Accidents
Over 700,000 people participate in boating activities in a given year in the United States. Over 3,000 people are injured and over 700 fatalities occur from boating-related accidents. The vast majority of fatalities are a result of drowning, and nearly 90% of those who drowned were not wearing life jackets. Here are a few tips to help keep you safe on the water:
Wear a life jacket. There are now more options than ever when it comes to life jackets. Many are now more stylish and comfortable, leaving no reason why every boat passenger should not wear one. It is important to wear a Coast Guard-approved life jacket to ensure the highest quality.
Take a boating safety course. Many accidents involve operator error or are preventable by skillful handling of the boat. Boating education courses teach the safest ways to operate a boat and care for passengers. In 2006, 70% of all fatal accidents occurred in boats whose operator had not taken a boating education course.
Avoid alcoholic beverages. As with any motor vehicle, it is unsafe to mix alcohol and driving. Alcohol impairs judgment, reaction time, and vision, among other important faculties.
Check your boat. The Vehicle Safety Check (VSC) program is a free initiative provided by the Coast Guard and other organizations. Personnel check safety equipment and explain safety procedures and regulations.
