The Hazards of Necrotizing Fasciitis
When a person sustains an injury, regardless of its severity, any break in the skin can create the conditions necessary for an infection. Some infections are relatively weak, causing some minor discomfort, and can be effectively cured through a steady antibiotic treatment. On the other end of this spectrum, some infections are truly grave and have horrifying complications that can have long-term, if not permanent, consequences.
If you have developed an injury or illness as a result of another party’s negligence, it is important that you discuss your legal options with an attorney. For a free consultation regarding your claim, contact the Houston personal injury lawyers of Williams Kherkher at 832-369-8296 today.
Symptoms and Signs of Necrotizing Fasciitis
Although rare as an infection, necrotizing fasciitis can occur even in minor injuries. Once the bacteria enter into the body, the infection begins to release deadly toxins into the surrounding skin and muscle tissue. Although this infection is commonly known as a flesh-eating disease, it actually breaks down the tissue, rather than consuming it. From the point of infection, the bacteria spread quickly into nearby tissue.
The following symptoms are some of the key signs of necrotizing fasciitis:
- Extreme pain near the site of the injury
- Discolored, purple skin
- Skin hot to the touch
- The appearance of blistering skin
- Patches of dead tissue
- Fever
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
Eventually, this infection can trigger what is known as toxic shock. The body reacts to the infection through widespread inflammation, destabilizing the entire body. Even if the individual survives the infection, the affected areas must be cut off of the body and there may be substantial damage done to the internal organs from shock.
