A 79-car accident in Port Arthur occurred last week due to fog and smoke in the air preventing drivers from seeing clearly in front of them.
The accident sent 54 people to nearby hospitals after it occurred on Texas 73, just outside of Port Arthur. The accident occurred Thursday night when the smoke and fog in the air limited the driver’s visibility and caused 22 separate car accidents.
As a result of this, 18 people were charged in the crash. Charges included failure to control speed and driving with a suspended license. The Department of Transportation placed flashing lights on the highway in order to warn drivers of the condition. Before the large accident was reported, the roadway was completely clear and drivers were being very cautious.
