Musician Dies After Chantix-Related Rage
Carter Albrecht, an indie musician and Dallas resident, died recently after a mix of Chantix and alcohol sent him on a violent rampage. Albrecht was visiting his girlfriend, Ryann Rathbone, at her apartment when he worked himself into a rage. Albrecht and Ryann had been using the anti-smoking drug, Chantix, for about a week when Albrecht's altered behavior led to his death. Both Albrecht and his girlfriend had complained about experiencing "Chantix Dreams" that left them feeling very disturbed and irritable. Albrecht had been drinking during the night of the incidence and police believe his blood-alcohol level was at three times the legal limit when he died.
After taking the Chantix drug that day, Albrecht became drunk and worked himself into a dangerous rage. Albrecht's girlfriend states that they had a violent encounter the evening of his death. She stated that he appeared confused and did not even recognize her. In a fit of rage, Albrecht found his way to a neighbor's door and proceeded to attempt to kick it in. After entering the neighbor's home and threatening the people inside, the neighbor shot Albrecht in the head, considering him a dangerous threat and an intruder.
Albrecht and his girlfriend were not the first to complain of violent and bizarre episodes while using Chantix. According to investigators, the Chantix label does not warn users of any dangerous reactions with alcohol consumption. The reaction caused by consuming alcohol while using Chantix has not been studied in clinical trials.
