Harris County Most Dangerous in Texas for Rail Accidents
According to statistics compiled by the Texas Rail Relocation and Improvement Association, Harris County is the most dangerous county in Texas in terms of railroad safety.
The Austin-based advocacy group analyzed Federal Railroad Administration data on passenger and freight train accidents statewide between 1998 and 2007, concluding that Harris, Tarrant, Bexar, and Dallas counties were the most at risk of rail accidents.
In Harris County alone, a total of 1,376 railroad accidents resulted in 1,145 injuries and 90 deaths during the period studied.
The state of Texas boasts thousands of miles of railroad; Harris County has a particularly high concentration of rail lines, due to its proximity to the densely-populated port city of Houston.
A spokeswoman from Union Pacific Railroad disputed the Association's findings, placing the blame for train accidents on reckless drivers.
